Student Behavior

Schools that are safe and orderly, where respect is valued by both students and staff alike, are not only likely to be higher achieving, but generally have a more positive school climate as well.  The fifth grade faculty has developed a discipline plan that establishes a framework for fairness and consistency in the handling of student discipline.  This is in addition to the Lowell Student Handbook.

The discipline plan is based on a common set of expectations and includes the following assumptions:

1.      Teachers who repeatedly respond to misbehavior spend less time on instruction.

2.      The distractions created by misbehavior within the classroom make it difficult for students to be attentive to instruction.

3.      Many behavior problems can be prevented when all teachers communicate consistent expectations to students and follow similar intervention strategies when students misbehave.

4.      Many behavior problems can be prevented when students, teachers, parents, counselors, and administrators understand their respective responsibilities and reinforce each other’s efforts.

Classroom Rules

1.     Be on time.

2.     Follow directions.

3.     Be prepared for class.

4.     Be respectful.

5.     Be on task.

Consequences:*

1^st Strike = noted in assignment book (parent signature required)

2^nd Strike = official letter sent home (stapled in assignment book)

                   parent signature required

3^rd Strike = sent to office/possible in-school or out-of-school suspension

*Please note:  severe offenses will be directly handled by administration.

Rewards:*

·        Terrific Kids (Cub of the Month) program

·        Classroom incentives

·        “Paw-sitive” behavior prizes

*Each homeroom teacher may add rewards for good behavior.
