New School Options    GASTON COUNTY SCHOOLS

In 2015, the Board of Education began exploring options for new schools in Gaston County. After a series of community forums and a public hearing in March, the Board voted to move forward with the new school options.

▪ The school is expected to open in fall 2017. A groundbreaking ceremony was held June 6.

New elementary magnet school

▪ The new elementary magnet school offers a curriculum focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and opened in August 2016 at the existing Hawks Nest Intermediate School.

▪ Hawks Nest Intermediate, a grades 4-5 school, consolidated with Robinson Elementary, which currently served grades K-3. Robinson is a grades K-5 school.

▪ An application and lottery process was held to determine which students would attend the new elementary magnet school.

Career and Technical Education

▪ An oversight committee appointed by the Board of Education spent six months researching possible options to enhance our Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. The committee brought its recommendations to the Board of Education in early 2016 for consideration and the Board of Education approved the committee's recommendations. One of the recommendations was the approval of the Career Academy at Hunter Huss High School. For more information on the program, please click here.
