The mission of Gaston County Schools' Nursing Program is to eliminate or alleviate health barriers that are interfering wtih a student's ability to learn and to create a safe and orderly environment thereby increasing student attendance, increasing academic performance and decreasing behavior problems.
This mission statement compliments the mission statement for Gaston County School System that is "to provide a safe and orderly learning environment" where all students meet educational goals, appreciate the worth of each individual and become contributing members of society.
Gaston County School Nurses:
- Serve an approximate student population of 32,000
- Educate over 7,000 students in teh health education areas of Family Life,
- Provide immunization review and compliance to all students who enter Gaston County Schools
- Provide physical assessment appraisals and follow-ups to over 10,000 students
- Provide vision screening and follow-up to over 20,000 students
- Provide medication monitoring
- Supervise special health care plans to over 20,000 students
- Provide health education and health assessment in the Gaston County Schools staff of over 2,500
The ratio of school nurses to student population is approximately 1:1700.
All Gaston County school nurses are registered nurses with a Bachelor's Degree and a National School Nurse Certification.
