Hunter Huss High School and the IB Middle Years Program

Hunter Huss High School is the only school in Gaston County Schools authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program and is only one of eight high schools in the state of North Carolina authorized to offer the Middle Years Program for ninth and tenth graders. Hunter Huss High School has been authorized to offer the  Middle Years Program since July 2006.

The IB Middle Years Program (MYP) for students aged 11 to 16, provides a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and become critical and reflective thinkers.

Beginning with the Class of 2014, Hunter Huss High School has become an IB World School with the MYP, its practices and principles, available to all students who entered grade nine in August 2010.

As we instruct our students and guide them as they find their place in our global society, we encourage each of them to successfully pursue the MYP certificate, a culmination of a two-year Middle Year Program which ends with the completion of grade ten.

In order the receive the MYP certificate, the students must meet these requirements:

  • complete and reflect upon 15 hours of community and service.
  • pass all classes required in the eight subject areas and score 33 points out of 56 possible points.
  • complete the process of the personal project; present it to Huss staff and their peers; and score 3 out of 7 possible   points.
