The Hot and Cold Summer

Reading- We will be reading the story The Hot and Cold Summer by Johanna Hurwitz.  The genre of the story is realistic fiction.  We will be studying two skills- 1. Prefixes, Suffixes, and Roots. 2. Point of View.

A prefix is a word part that is added to the beginning of a root (pretest).  A suffix is a word part that is added to the end of a root (lovely).  A root is a word that may or may not be able to stand alone as a word.  An example of a root that can stand alone is care, as careless.  An example of a root that cannot stand alone is clude, as in include.  Point of view is the vantage point from which the story is being told.  First person is told from someone in the story.  Third-Person limited is told from an outside narrator that speaks about only one character’s observation, feelings, or knowledge.  Third-Person Omniscient is told from an outside narrator that speaks about anyone in the story.  The vocabulary words for this week are: commotion, authority, exhausted, incredible, vow, and souvenir.  Your child will do several activity sheets to practice the skills this week.  We will have a reading test on the story and vocabulary words on Friday.  A great website is: http://www.harcourtschool.com/menus/trophies/activities/reading_skills/gr5.html.  Click on the title of this week’s story. This site will help your child practice their skills and comprehension for this story.

Commotion-a burst of noise and confusion

Authority-a person who has special knowledge; an expert

Exhausted-very tired; fatigued

Incredible-so strange or unusual as to be unbelievable

Vow-a serious promise or pledge

Souvenir-something kept as a reminder of a special time or place.

Spelling- We will be studying words with short vowels.  The words are as follows:  master, ahead, build, front, meant, bread, ready, busy, quit, mother, above, does, advantage, business, sweater, plastic, balance, limit, among, and dozen.  The challenge words are: activity, building, heavy, biscuit, and purpose.  We will have a pretest on Monday.  Your child will be tested only on the words they miss on their pretest on Friday.  We will have a worksheet for homework- Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Grammar- We will be studying declarative and interrogative sentences.  A declarative sentence makes a statement and ends with a period.  An interrogative sentence asks a question and ends with a question mark.  Your child will have several worksheets that they will use to practice these skills during class.  They will also have one for homework for Thursday. A great website to help practice these sentences is: http://www.harcourtschool.com/menus/trophies/activities/grammar_gold/gr5.html
