Director's Update - 1/3
I hope everyone had a good break and is ready to get back to work.  For those of you who do not know, I will be out for the remainder of the first semester to be home with the baby.  Students were given the final exam review sheet today and it is also available here

Those students auditioning for All-District on Saturday should visit this page for helpful information about the auditions.  Remember, all major scales on the sheet should be performed within the 3 minute time frame.  The chromatic scale is not part of the time limit.  I will meet you in your warm-up room, NOT THE CAFETERIA, between 8-8:45 Saturday morning.  Please let me know if you will not be auditioning.  Remember, though, you cannot get your $10 back.  If you have not paid this yet, please bring it with you on Saturday.

Practice charts for Dec. 18-24 and Dec. 25-31 are due tomorrow (Wednesday).  There are plenty of copies on the shelf under the SMARTBoard and it is on the website.

Students who wish to audition for All-County Band should go here https://docs.google.com/a/gaston.k12.nc.us/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dEFXTlF6WU0zVDFXYkl6QVBjaW0zRnc6MQ to register for the auditions.  There will also be a sign up sheet on the bulletin board on Friday.  I'm still trying to confirm the date of the auditions, and will let you know as soon as I get it.

That's all for now.  More to come later.

Director's Update - 12/12
Thank you to all those who helped out at the Dallas Christmas Parade on Friday!  I was very pleased with the band's performance.  All uniforms and uniform bags should be turned in at this point.  If your child has not done so, please make sure they bring those to school by Wednesday this week.  Thursday is our concert at 7pm.  Students should be ready to warm-up on stage at 6pm.  I have copied the dress code from the handbook below.

Concert Dress –

Men:  Long-sleeve, white dress shirt, black dress pants, tie, black socks, black dress shoes

Women:  Long black skirt with white blouse or long black dress, black dress shoes (no flip flops or sandals)

Hope to see everyone at the concert Thursday night!  The concert band, jazz band, small ensembles, and color guard will be performing.

Also, don't forget that practice charts are due by the second class meeting each week.

Director's Update - 11/22
Concert band rehearsals are well underway and students should be bringing horns and music home every day to practice.  Beginning today with the 3rd six-weeks period, students will be required to complete an individual practice chart.  This can include any time spend practicing their instrument outside of class, ensemble rehearsals, and performances.  The practice chart is available here.  Please make sure you sign off on the chart each week and attest to the accurate amount of time practiced.  Inaccurate time listed or forged signatures will result in a zero for that week's practice chart.  If you cannot honestly attest that your student has practiced the amount of time they say they have, please don't sign off on it.  This practice chart is not about achieving a certain number of minutes each week.  It's about encouraging the students to assess their current practice habits and improve on them as needed.  Each day's music-making experience in class is only as successful and enjoyable if students are honestly prepared in advance.

Jazz Band rehearsals have begun.  The jazz band will meet on Tuesdays and select Thursdays from 3:30-5:00.  We hope to have this ensemble perform on the Dec. 15th concert.  A small ensemble has been selected to perform for Carols on the Square on Dec. 2 as well as at Firestone Wesleyan Church on Dec. 11 for the morning service.  Our next full band performance is Dec. 3 at the Ranlo Parade.  Students are responsible for their own transportation. Students will meet at the Rex Lodge (next to Maylo UMC) at 12:00.  The parade starts at 1:00 and students should be finished by 2:00.  Information for the loading crew will be sent next week.  We also have a parade in Dallas on Dec. 9.  Students should be dismissed from school early that day (time TBA) and will meet at Ingles at 3:00.  The parade starts at 4:00 and students should be finished by 5:00.  The permission form for the parades must be returned by Tuesday, Nov. 29. The schedule for December full band performances is available here

Finally, students have begun signing up to work basketball concessions.  Every student has signed up to work at least one shift.  I will send you the schedule so you know when your child is working as soon as it is complete.  I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving holiday and is able to enjoy some time with family and friends.

Director's Update - 10/18
Congratulations to the students on such a fine performance Saturday!  The placements certainly did not reflect how well the students performed.  But, of course, we can't control what other bands do.  Thanks also to the pit crew on being so efficient Saturday by getting our equipment to and from the field in a timely manner.  I'm really looking forward to finishing up strong this weekend at Foard.  This will be our last week of Tuesday/Thursday marching band practices.  Beginning on November 1, we will follow this schedule: Tuesdays - Jazz Band (3:30-5:00), Wednesdays - Brass Quintet/Woodwind Quintet (3:30-4:30), Thursdays - Percussion Ensemble (Starting Nov. 10, 3:30-4:30).  Students must maintain a C average in all classes to participate in any of these groups.  The brass and woodwind quintets will be auditioned groups.

The schedule for Friday and Saturday in available on the Media page. Friday, we will honor our seniors with a dinner at 5:00 prior to the game and Saturday we will compete at the Fred. T. Foard Band Classic.  It would be great to see the stadium filled with North Gaston supporters on Saturday.  These kids have worked so hard and deserve your support on Saturday.  We will stop to eat at Wendy's in Lincolnton on the way home.  Please let me know if you have any questions and I look forward to seeing you on Friday and Saturday.

Clarification on Ride Release Form
The purpose of the ride release form is to give parents the opportunity to take their child home directly from an away game or competition.  Students are expected to stay with the band until the game is over or in the case of a contest until after the awards.  If there is a special need for a student to leave earlier, this must be approved by Mr. Reed prior to the day of the event.  If the form is not turned in before we leave the day of the event, students must ride home on the bus.  Also, no students should ride with their parents back to the school.  If a student is going to go back to the school after an event, it must be on the bus.  You may download this form on the Documents page.
