Retirees honored at dinner celebration

Retirees honored at dinner celebration

Gaston County Schools honors its retirees at dinner celebration

Gaston County Schools honored its 2025-2026 school year retirees during a dinner celebration on June 24 at Camelot Meadows in Belmont.  

Use of the venue was donated by Camelot Meadows, and the dinner was provided by Sammy’s Neighborhood Pub in Belmont.  Door prizes, ranging from restaurant gift cards, speciality gifts, and a smart TV, were given by businesses in Belmont.  About Face Total Training in Belmont offered a free one-month gym membership to all attendees.

Highlights included the recognition of the retirees in attendance and acknowledging their years of service to Gaston County Schools, a retirement trivia game, and giveaways.  Cathy Young, a realtor, founder of the ROCK (Reaching Our Community’s Kids) nonprofit organization, and former educator and mayor of Cramerton, served as the guest speaker.

Superintendent of Schools Morgen Houchard stated, “Retirement is a milestone that represents much more than the conclusion of a career.  It reflects years of commitment, perseverance, sacrifice, and service.” 

Dr. Houchard added, “All of our retirees have contributed to the success of our students and schools in very meaningful ways.  As they begin a new chapter in life, everyone associated with Gaston County Schools wishes them much joy, good health, and many experiences in the years ahead to enjoy new adventures, spend more time with family and friends, pursue hobbies and interests, and create new memories.”

The Human Resources Department coordinated the celebration with help from the Communications Department.  Chief communications officer Todd Hagans served as the emcee.

Originally, the retirement celebration had been canceled because of budget constraints.  However, community leaders like Deborah Baxa of Camelot Meadows, John Bailey of Sammy’s Neighborhood Pub, and others stepped forward to see that it happened.  

“We are grateful for everyone who had a role in making the retirement celebration possible – we could not have done it without their sponsorship and contributions,” said Houchard.  “It was a special event to honor our retirees for their many years of service and dedication to Gaston County Schools, and we appreciate everyone’s support.”
