Gaston Music Education Foundation Scholarships

Students receive scholarships from Gaston Music Education Foundation 

Seven students in Gaston County Schools are recipients of scholarships from the Gaston Music Education Foundation.

Zachary Hatfield of Stuart W. Cramer High School and Ella Queen of Forestview High School both received a $3,000 scholarship to study music in college.  Hatfield received the Edith Kersh College Scholarship, and Queen received the Marie Torrence College Scholarship.

Additionally, five students received scholarship assistance to attend summer music camp.  

  • K’Hari Craig of Ashbrook High School received the Martha Kendrick Cannon Music Scholarship to attend music camp at Appalachian State University. 
     
  • Jeremiah Griggs of Gaston Early College High School received the Dina Jo Hanna Scholarship to attend music camp at UNC-Greensboro.  
     
  • Hannah Lineberger of South Point High School received the Margaret Alexander McArver Scholarship to attend music camp at UNC-Greensboro. 
     
  • Mykila Manning of North Gaston High School received the Gaston Music Education Foundation scholarship to attend music camp at UNC-Greensboro.  
     
  • Adoma Eshun of Highland School of Technology received the Gaston Music Education Foundation scholarship to attend music camp at UNC-Greensboro.

The Gaston Music Education Foundation has a long history of investing in students who are interested in music and the fine arts.  The Foundation got its start in 1950 when a group of women from the Gastonia Music Club raised money to help support a Gastonia High School student’s college education.  Since then, the Foundation has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships to deserving students.  Scholarships are awarded based on an application and audition process.

High school seniors planning to major in music can apply for a college scholarship while underclassmen can apply to attend summer music camp at UNC-Greensboro or Appalachian State University.  The scholarship program is intended to help students pursue their goals in music while boosting self-esteem, confidence, and character.  Past scholarship recipients have returned from college to teach and perform in Gaston County; their ongoing work and advocacy enhances the fine arts locally and emphasizes the importance of the fine arts in the community.
