Information about Licensure

North Carolina law requires professional employees of public schools to hold, at all times, a valid North Carolina license appropriate to the position in which he or she is employed.

To the extent possible, all professional teaching assignments will be in the area of the professional employee’s license except for what may be allowed by state and federal law and state board policy. Core academic subjects include English, reading/language arts, mathematics, science, foreign languages, civics and government, economics, arts, history, and geography.

To the extent the administration identifies to the board a shortage of qualified licensed teachers available to fill teaching positions in specific areas, the board may elect to employ teachers under provisional or temporary licensure as allowed by North Carolina General Statute § 115C-296.1 and any implementing regulations.
