Sherwood Elementary earns Green Ribbon School designation for behavior program

Sherwood Elementary earns Green Ribbon School recognition Sherwood Elementary School in Gastonia has been recognized by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction as a Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Green Ribbon School.  The recognition is the result of successful positive behavior support strategies implemented across all grade levels at the school.

Sherwood focuses on RAMS expectations: Responsibility, Attitude, Manners, and Safety.  Posters around the school remind students of the expectations, and students are rewarded for their efforts with RAMS tickets to use at the school store.  The school also holds planned and surprise celebrations to encourage good behavior.

The school’s mascot is the ram, which lends itself to the PBIS theme.    

“PBIS is really about relationships,” said third-grade teacher Megan Euliss, who is the school’s PBIS coach. “It’s about knowing our students and knowing what they need to ensure that they demonstrate positive behaviors.”

When it comes to addressing behavior in the classroom, teachers are able to get creative, using tools such as sand, fidgets, and emotional journals.  By using these tools, they are able to determine what is best to help students to be on their best behavior. Additionally, the teachers use positive office referrals and classroom interventions to help students channel their feelings and express themselves.  The program also encourages student-teacher buddies within the school, thus serving as another way to support students.

Sherwood is the only school in Gaston County that has been recognized for the state-level Green Ribbon School honor.

“We are so proud of the efforts of our teachers to promote positive behavior and support our PBIS program,” said principal Kristie Gornto. “PBIS is a teacher-led initiative that celebrates our students’ excellent behavior.”

Gornto said she and the staff realize that effective classroom management and good behavior from students go hand-in-hand in ensuring quality teaching and learning.  For students to learn, they have to conduct themselves in a positive manner and understand why they should be responsible, have a positive attitude, use good manners, and realize that safety is important.

The RAMS expectations extend beyond the classroom to the cafeteria, playground, and school bus.  Wherever students go, they are expected to show their Ram pride through good behavior.

“The program helps our students feel appreciated, and it build a culture of respect throughout our school,” added Gornto.  “It helps foster self-respect, self-control, and academic growth.”
