‘Do the Right Thing’ award winners for December
‘Do the Right Thing’ award winners chosen for December
Every day in our schools, there are students who set themselves apart by doing things that make a difference in the lives of others. They do these things without expecting anything in return.
These students are recognized by The Gaston Gazette’s ‘Do the Right Thing’ program. In partnership with Gaston County Schools, The Gazette honors a student at each school level every month from October through April.
The program brings attention to students who distinguish themselves by their actions whether big or small. From organizing a fundraiser or a food drive to holding open the door for students on their way to class, these exemplary students make sure that their classmates and others are cared for and treated well.
The students’ attitudes, accomplishments, and efforts make them stand out as positive role models for others, and faculty and staff are always sure to take notice. The information about each ‘Do the Right Thing’ winner is provided by the principal.
Here are the profiles for our ‘Do the Right Thing’ award winners for December 2022:
Elementary School Winner
Sam Stoner
Page Primary School
Parents: Alexis and Brett Stoner
First grader Sam Stoner is the definition of a good student. He looks out for others, helps to encourage his peers, and is always a team player. Sam treats everyone equally and with respect, and he always makes the right choice. According to his teacher, Sam regularly plays with students who feel excluded at recess and makes sure they are invited to play games with him. He embodies the “Page Primary Patriots Pledge” every day.
Elementary School Winner
Tristan Cooper
Gaston Virtual Academy
Parents: Amie and Burton Cooper
Tristan Cooper, a second grader, is bright, considerate, respectful, and eager to learn. He makes sure to listen and follow directions, and he goes above and beyond to do well in his class. Tristan is also willing to help others if they need it. For example, while working on a math problem in virtual small groups, the teacher observed Tristan sharing his screen with his classmates and showing the other members of his group how to solve the problem.
Middle School Winner
Neva’h Bell
Grier Middle School
Parents: Arabia Edwards and Michael Bell
Seventh grader Neva’h Bell is the first student in class each morning, and she shows initiative by carrying out classroom duties without being asked. Neva’h is an outstanding student, who always tries her best and lends a helping hand when needed. She is on task during instruction, follows classroom rules, and serves her peers in handing out materials and picking them up. Neva’h displays a positive attitude and is a great role model in her classes.
High School Winner
Nicole Valverde Cordero
North Gaston High School
Parents: Grettel Cordero-Oconitrillo and Jhanson Valverde
Senior Nicole Valverde Cordero likes to make sure everyone is included. A friend to all, Nicole has used her experience in being a new student to help others feel welcome. Recently, when a new student came to North Gaston, Nicole reached out to help the student navigate the ups and downs of attending a new school. She shared ways to handle being at a new school and how to be successful. She is a great example of what it means to “do the right thing.”
Congratulations to our ‘Do the Right Thing’ award winners!
