Stuart W. Cramer students win three Blumey Awards

Stuart W. Cramer High School wins three Blumey Awards

Stuart W. Cramer High School won three big honors during the eighth annual Blumey Awards ceremony on Sunday, May 19 at the Belk Theater in Charlotte.

The awards recognize the school for its spring musical, “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown.”

■ Alex Manley won the Best Supporting Actor award for his portrayal of “Schroeder.”

■ Emily Harris earned the Technical Achievement Award for her outstanding work to create costumes for “Charlie Brown.”  She also won the award last year for the school’s production of “Cinderella.” Additionally, Harris received the Mary Doctor Performing Arts Scholarship valued at $10,000 (renewable for four years). She plans to attend the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

■ Stuart W. Cramer also won the Best Costume Creation award.  Harris was a major contributor to the cast and crew winning this award.  She supervised the work of 54 students and five adult volunteers in the creation of 134 costume pieces for the show.

The school also earned award nominations for Best Set Construction, Best Choreography Execution, Best Ensemble, Best Overall Direction, and Best Musical (Tier I Schools).

In addition to Stuart W. Cramer, Forestview High School and Highland School of Technology were among the 47 schools to participate in the Blumey Awards program.  Students from the three schools were featured in the ceremony’s opening and closing numbers. Appearing in the numbers were Jacob Hooks and Marissa Garrison (Stuart W. Cramer), Grace Miller and Landon “Scout” Stamey (Forestview), and Lauren Snyder and Rebekah “Jay” Schulz (Highland).

Forestview presented “Oklahoma!” for its spring musical and Highland staged “The Wizard of Oz.”

Similar to Broadway’s Tony Awards, the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center created the Blumey Awards to recognize the outstanding talent of high school theater students in the greater Charlotte region.  Each school’s musical was viewed and evaluated by a panel of three judges, who awarded points according to detailed guidelines.

The Blumey Awards ceremony will air on WTVI - PBS Charlotte on May 28 at 8:00 p.m., May 30 at 9:00 p.m., June 22 at 6:00 p.m., and June 23 at 2:00 p.m.  Click the link for more information:
