Bessemer City educator wins brand new car
Bessemer City High School educator wins brand new car from Kia of Gastonia
Kathleen Macdonald can no longer claim that she never wins anything.
Macdonald, a teacher assistant at Bessemer City High School, was the lucky winner whose name was drawn during Gaston County Schools’ sixth annual Kia Outstanding Educator Awards. The ceremony was held Wednesday, April 17 at Stuart W. Cramer High School.
“I’m in shock,” Macdonald said, standing by her shiny new Kia Soul from Kia of Gastonia moments after hearing her name announced as the winner. “I never win anything. I’m one of those people.”
Macdonald was in good company as she dropped her name into a gold-colored bin along with 54 other Gaston County Schools employees. Every school in the district and the central office nominated a candidate for the 2018-2019 Kia Outstanding Educator Award based on the nominees’ dedication to their job and the help they provide for students.
Macdonald made sure to thank her co-workers at Bessemer City High School and across Gaston County as she sat behind the wheel of her brand new car.
“Thank you to my co-workers who graciously voted for me,” she said. “They’re just the best along with everyone in this entire school system.”
As for Kia of Gastonia, Macdonald expressed her gratitude to the dealership owner, Chris Hafer, as well. “Thank you, thank you, thank you,” she said. “What a gift.”
This is the sixth year for the Kia Outstanding Educator Awards, and the ceremony was held in conjunction with Gaston County Schools’ 50th anniversary. The school district partners with Kia of Gastonia to conduct the program, which is intended to recognize and thank employees who are seen as “unsung heroes” for the work they do.
To show appreciation to Kia of Gastonia, each school created a large thank-you poster. Students presented the posters to Hafer during the ceremony. Additionally, the 55 nominees were introduced on stage and received a plaque from Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker and members of the Board of Education.
