Gardner Park Elementary custodian Stevie Anderson wins Kia award and new car

As a custodian at Gardner Park Elementary School, Stevie Anderson does most of his work behind the scenes. But on Wednesday afternoon, he took center stage as the 2014 Kia Outstanding Educator for Gaston County Schools, winning a new car from Kia of Gastonia.

Kia Outstanding Educator Award Winner Stevie Anderson Anderson was one of 57 school employees honored during the second annual Kia awards program, which recognizes the unsung heroes of Gaston County Schools who make a difference every day for students. Anderson’s name was selected in a random drawing, and he received a 2014 Kia Soul donated by Kia of Gastonia.

As he sat in his new car for the first time, Anderson thanked Kia of Gastonia president Chris Hafer. “I can’t believe this. This is amazing,” said Anderson.

The ceremony was held at Stuart W. Cramer High School where the award nominees were recognized for their contributions to Gaston County Schools and received a plaque from Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker.

Each school and the central office selected a nominee for the award. They included teachers, custodians, office personnel, teacher assistants, cafeteria workers, bus drivers and support staff.

“Each of you give your best efforts each day to support our children and our schools,” said Superintendent Booker during his welcoming remarks. “We honor you today for your excellent work and all you do to inspire success in Gaston County Schools.”

Booker, along with Board of Education members Kaye Gribble, Dot Guthrie and Mark Stephens, presented a resolution of appreciation to Hafer in honor of his generous contribution. This is the second year in a row Hafer has donated a car in support of Gaston County Schools.

Hafer said he wanted to honor school employees for all they do for the community.

“You give so much to the future of our children,” Hafer said to the nominees. “This is our way of saying, ‘Thank you.’”
