Students participate in Career Signing Day
Graduating seniors participate in Career Signing Day
When 12 seniors in the Class of 2019 walked across the graduation stage on June 8, they had already taken a big step toward having a promising career.
The week before graduation, the students participated in Gaston County Schools’ second Career Signing Day ceremony. Patterned after career signing events that typically involve athletes, the students signed a Certificate of Achievement to signify their intent to work for one of eight local companies.
At the ceremony on May 30, students “signed” for jobs with eight local employers: American & Efird, Dixon Valve and Coupling, GSM Services, McGee Brothers, Parkdale Mills, Pharr Yarns, Rochling, and Showalter Construction.
The Career Signing Day is a project organized by the school district’s Career and Technical Education program. Last year, the event involved only four students and three businesses, and organizers hope to involve even more students and businesses next year.
Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker stated, “We sincerely appreciate the partnership we have with the local business community. Working together, we are able to equip our students with the knowledge and skills they need so they can get a great job right out of high school.”
Dr. Booker added, “The Career Signing Day program brings attention to our efforts to connect students with local businesses and make them aware of career opportunities right here in Gaston County. We are very proud of the students who accepted jobs with the eight local companies, and we are confident that they will be successful.”
Through the Career and Technical Education program, students gain valuable knowledge in a particular career field and have opportunities to earn industry-recognized credentials, which gives them an advantage as they enter the workforce after high school.
