‘Do the Right Thing’ award winners chosen for April

Every day in our schools, there are students who set themselves apart by doing things that make a difference in the lives of others.  They do these things without expecting anything in return.

These students are recognized by The Gaston Gazette’s ‘Do the Right Thing’ program.  In partnership with Gaston County Schools, The Gazette honors a student at each school level every month from October through April. 

The program brings attention to students who distinguish themselves by their actions whether big or small.  From organizing a fundraiser or a food drive to holding open the door for students on their way to class, these exemplary students make sure that their classmates and others are cared for and treated well.

The students’ attitudes, accomplishments, and efforts make them stand out as positive role models for others, and faculty and staff are always sure to take notice.  The information about each ‘Do the Right Thing’ winner is provided by the principal.

Elementary School Winner
Jaxon Rhinehart
Springfield Elementary School
Parents: Paige Underwood and Hayden Rhinehart

Jaxon Rhinehart is a great example of what it means to be focused, self-disciplined, and a good role model.  The second-grader chooses to do the right thing consistently and stays true to himself, even when others around him aren’t making the best decisions.  Jaxon is kind and known for being helpful at dismissal each day.  While waiting with other students, you will find him encouraging his classmates to make good choices.

Parents: Stephanie and Thomas Martin

Fifth grader Hayden Martin goes above and beyond to be kind to others.  She offers to help her classmates and teachers whenever needed.  Hayden has exhibited great leadership skills in extracurricular activities like robotics and Battle of the Books.  Recently, she volunteered to read to a first grade class and did a great job explaining the book’s message to the younger students. She is a great student leader.

Seventh grader Sanaa’ya Ratchford sets a great example of doing the right thing every single day.  She is kind to others and always helps out when she is needed.  Sanaa’ya has integrity and always makes good choices, even when she thinks no one is looking.  For example, during a schoolwide celebration, Sanaa’ya was given the incorrect change from the concession stand.  She did the right thing and returned the money right away.

Forestview High School
Parents: Deanna and Andrew Ferrell

Senior Andrew Ferrell is a hardworking student, who is always kind and welcoming toward others.  He never hesitates to offer help. Recently, Andrew went out of his way to support a teacher when the teacher needed help getting a wheelchair to campus after hours.  This gesture of kindness was unprompted, but Andrew didn’t hesitate to offer to help.  This is just one example of Andrew’s strength of character.
