Dr. Mellon is a native of Gaston County, and graduated from East Gaston High School. She holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, a master's degree in School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Gardner Webb University in Boiling Springs.

Dr. Mellon's career in education began as a high school Civics and Economics teacher at Hunter Huss High school. After teaching four years, Dr. Mellon was accepted into the North Carolina Principal Fellows Program. She continued to work at Hunter Huss High School providing student services, while completing her master's degree in School Administration. Dr. Mellon started her administrative career at Bessemer City Middle School approximately 15 years ago as a principal intern.  Following this, she served as an assistant principal at Grier Middle School, North Gaston High School, and Lowell Elementary School She then served as principal at Bessemer City Middle School before returning to Grier Middle School in 2024.

Dr. Mellon is the mother of a beautiful 17 year old daughter who is entering the twelfth grade. She states being a mother has been the most valuable experience in teaching what is truly important when it comes to education - the well-being and safety of children.
