    17 out of 20 of the 2016-2017 varsity athletic teams were named Scholar Athlete teams by the NCHSAA for maintaining an unweighted 3.1 or above GPA.

    All of the 2016-17 South Point athletic teams had an average unweighted GPA of 3.299.

    The 2016 South Point football team had an unweighted GPA of 3.020.

    We had 283 varsity student athletes.  Of that number 205 were NCHSAA Scholar Athletes, maintaining a 3.5 or above weighted GPA.

    South Point teams earned the following GPAs for the 2016-17 athletic season: Varsity Baseball – 3.321; Men’s Outdoor Track – 3.072; Women’s Varsity Soccer – 3.760; Women’s Outdoor Track and Field – 3.461; Varsity Softball – 3.512; Men’s Tennis – 3.205; Men’s Golf – 2.875; Varsity Football – 3.020; Varsity Cheerleading – 3.413; Men’s Cross Country – 3.550; Women’s Cross Country – 3.729; Women’s Golf – 3.750; Men’s Varsity Soccer – 3.613; Women’s Tennis – 3.607; Varsity Volleyball – 3.375; Men’s Varsity Basketball – 3.528; Women’s Varsity Basketball – 3.450; Men’s Swimming – 3.408; Women’s Swimming – 3.646; Wrestling – 3.566.

    The Chief Marshall and 10 of the junior marshals for the 2017 graduation were Scholar Athletes.

    The salutatorian for the class of 2017 was a scholar athlete.

    South Point has another academic recognition for its athletes – the South Point Academic All-Conference Red Raider team. There is a fall sports team and a winter/spring sports team.  These athletes must be named an All-Conference Player, have a 3.5 unweighted GPA during that sports semester, have no infractions, and a maximum 5 excused absences.  The members of the Fall Academic All-Conference Red Raider team were Brooke Cox, Larry Dowdy, Nathan Hamilton, Emma King, Colby Persgard-Howe, and Aurora Ziemer. The Academic All-Conference awarded for the winter/spring sports season will be announced at the Sept. 15th home game versus Stuart Cramer.

    On the athletic side the 2016 Football team won the State 3A Championship and the 2017 Baseball team won the Big South 3A Conference championship. The Men’s Basketball team and Men’s Soccer team advanced to the 3rd round of the state championships.
