‘Do the Right Thing’ award winners chosen for February
Every day in our schools, there are students who set themselves apart by doing things that make a difference in the lives of others. They do these things without expecting anything in return.
These students are recognized by The Gaston Gazette’s ‘Do the Right Thing’ program. In partnership with Gaston County Schools, The Gazette honors a student at each school level every month from October through April.
The program brings attention to students who distinguish themselves by their actions whether big or small. From organizing a fundraiser or a food drive to holding open the door for students on their way to class, these exemplary students make sure that their classmates and others are cared for and treated well.
The students’ attitudes, accomplishments, and efforts make them stand out as positive role models for others, and faculty and staff are always sure to take notice. The information about each ‘Do the Right Thing’ winner is provided by the principal.
Here are the profiles for our ‘Do the Right Thing’ award winners for February 2023:
Elementary School Winner
Kaitlyn Dockery
W.A. Bess Elementary School
Parents: Tim Dockery and Ashley Isaac-Dockery
Fifth grader Kaitlyn Dockery doesn’t just have a heart for helping people; she loves to help animals, too. Kaitlyn recently approached her school’s principal with an idea for a service project to collect items for the Gaston Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic. She has placed bins around the school to help collect food, blankets, toys, and other items for animals. Kaitlyn’s attitude for helping the community sets a great example for her peers.
Elementary School Winner
La’Darius Pratt
Lowell Elementary School
Parent: Angela Pratt
La’Darius Pratt is hard-working and always looking for ways to help out in class and around the school. Recently, when he found money in the hallway, he immediately picked it up and turned it into the front office. His integrity and honesty make him stand out among his peers in his fifth grade class. Above all else, he sets a great example for the younger students at Lowell Elementary. Way to go, La’Darius!
Middle School Winner
Azriel Adams
Southwest Middle School
Parent: Amber Adams
Sixth grader Azriel Adams is always friendly, polite, and goes out of her way to help when she sees a need. Azriel comes into the cafeteria every day, eats her lunch, and then helps the custodian clean up. She is a self-starter, who volunteers to help out whenever there is a need. Azriel is a great student and role model, who is always willing to do what it takes to show off Roadrunner Pride!
High School Winner
Autumn Queen
Gaston Early College of Medical Sciences
Parents: Jessica and Andrew Queen
Tenth grader Autumn Queen is positive and kind to all students. Being active in her school and community, she jumps at the opportunity to help teachers and her peers. Autumn was recently recognized for her positive attitude and being willing to assist others in her learning lab and American history class. She is happy to help her peers when they are struggling with a subject, and she is respectful and complimentary of others.
