Relax with some fun READS this summer!

  • My first advice for kids in the summer is just to READ!  It’s summer, so read anything that appeals to you - from books to magazines to recipes to newspapers to billboards - you get my point, just read.

Second, it can be fun to do a laid back reading program and earn prizes too!  I have listed a few and most are either free or very low cost.  Kids earn prizes for reading PLUS if they bring a completed reading record from ANY of these reading programs by the W.A. Bess library when school starts back, I have a prize for them too.  Win! Win!

Summer reading
  •

Gaston County Public Library:  Sign-ups start June 1st at most locations.  Pick up reading packets and write down every time you read for 20 minutes.  Prizes for reaching different milestones on your reading record. (704)868-2164 option 1

Barnes and Noble:  You earn a book after reading 8 books and filling out this reading journal.

Books-A-Million Summer Reading Adventure:  Dav Pilkey, author of Captain Underpants and Dog Man is their reading ambassador this year - pretty cool!  Kids read 4 books purchased from a special B.A.M. reading list, fill out a log book, and get a Dog Man hat.

Scholastic Summer Read-A-Palooza:  This is all online, kids register and document their reading streaks.  Along the way they earn rewards and unlock book donations.  Here is a pdf about the program.

Design your own from Imagination Soup:  Maybe you want to be able to personalize your summer reading?!   You can design your own reading goals and come up with prizes or rewards.  I really liked the summer reading goals page plus it helps kids to narrow down what books they generally enjoy reading.  Imagination Soup Website
