All-county band clinic featured Gaston's best student musicians
Just two weeks after the top band students in the Charlotte region converged on Gaston County for the all-district clinic, Gaston’s best student musicians got the opportunity to take the spotlight in the all-county event.
The Gaston County Schools all-county band clinic for high school students was held Friday and Saturday (February 11-12) at Ashbrook High School. More than 100 students were involved in the program after being chosen through an audition process. Viewed as the most outstanding student musicians in Gaston County, they performed a concert for the public on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
Barry Howard from Belmont Abbey College conducted the symphonic band, and Dr. Dawn Price from Wingate University conducted the wind ensemble. The clinicians are considered among the best in the field of music education. Ashbrook band director Josh Westbrook supervised the event with help from the band directors from other Gaston County high schools.
The all-county clinic followed a successful South Central All-District Band Clinic that was held on January 28 at Stuart W. Cramer High School. The all-district clinic featured more than 350 students from across the greater Charlotte region, who came together and put the program on in just one day. The forecast for inclement weather forced organizers to condense the program from two days to one with students practicing all day on Friday and presenting the middle school and high school concerts Friday night.

Gaston County middle school students get their turn to be in the all-county spotlight this spring. The all-county band clinic for middle schools is set for April 1-2 at Holbrook Middle School.
