Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)

  • MTSS is an evidenced-based model of schooling that uses data-based problem-solving to integrate attendance, behavioral, academic and social-emotional (SEL) instruction and interventions.

In Gaston County Schools, we are building a three-tiered system of support for all students and staff. We work to integrate: Response to Intervention/Responsiveness to Instruction (RtI), Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS), social and emotional learning (SEL), and Comprehensive Learning Supports through the Professional Learning Community (PLC) process. This system of support will lead to total school improvement and improved academic success for all students.

    What is NC MTSS?
Family engagement within an MTSS is defined as the active and meaningful partnerships that educators build and maintain with student’s families for the purpose of supporting student learning.  It embodies the idea that all parties are equally invested in the student’s educational experience and all parties bring knowledge and skills of equal value to work together.

    What is “support”?
NC schools that are implementing an MTSS may talk about support for students. To further define that support, NC organizes this support around the instruction, the curriculum, and the environment.
